Celebration of International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Feb 11, 2022

Gender equality is a vital factor for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. For this purpose, two of the goal targets are “end all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere” and “adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels”. According with UNESCO data, less than 30% of researchers are women. Despite that, it has been found that women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields are paid less, do not progress as far as men in their careers and publish less scientific papers. Thus, over the past 15 years, the global community has made efforts in order to inspire and engage women and girls in science to decrease these inequalities.

In order to achieve gender equality and the participation of women and girls in science, the United Nations General Assembly declared February 11th as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2015. Since then, UNESCO and the UN Women, in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners, promote actions that support the access and participation of women and girls in science.

To mark this day, Biocant Park share testimonials in first person of women of a wide range of fields present in park´s ecosystem.
